When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

When we think of marine boat covers I am positive that the majority of us will straight away think of something that can be real expensive. Well the answer to this is yes and no. If you decide to buy a basic boat tarp rather than a more expensive custom boat cover then the savings can be quite significant. Stock boat tarps will do exactly the same job and will wrap around your craft. A customized boat cover on the other hand will certainly be more neatly fitted to your boat but to be honest who is even going to think about the cosmetic difference in your stored boat.

Boat tarps although not tightly fitted to your boat can be purchased in a number of pre-set standardised shapes. These are usually long or rectangular with the obvious places for tying tarp clips or other tarp accessories. Once wrapped around your boat a tarp cord can be looped through the D holes and then pulled tight in order to seal the gaps that are left.

Due to the fact that some marine craft will be constructed of wood it is vital that you use a mildewproof tarps for the purpose. This will ensure that the tarp will keep your boat free from all the elements and also form any harmful 3rd party parasite.

More and more we are seeing people use boat tarps as a replacement to the more traditional boat cover. This is for reasons of both cost and the fact that boat tarps is much stronger in some cases than that of the professionally customised boat covers. For the sake of cosmetic reasons people are at last using their heads and opting for the more pocket friendly and in some cases superior boat tarps designs.

Another great reason to stick with boat tarps is that as with all objects that are open to the elements in time your tarps cover may end up with the odd tear or so. I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.

Today, the most common sailboat is the sloop which features one mast and two sails, a normal mainsail and a foresail. This simple configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. The mainsail is attached to the mast and the boom, which is a spar capable of swinging across the boat, depending on the direction of the wind. Depending on the size and design of the foresail it can be called a jib, genoa, or spinnaker; it is possible but not common for a sloop to carry two foresails from the one forestay at one time (wing on wing). The forestay is a line or cable running from near the top of the mast to a point near the bow. In Bermuda, where a rig design influenced by the Lateen rig appeared on boats and came to be known as the Bermuda rig, a large spinnaker was carried on a spinnaker boom when running down-wind. The story of boats is as old as the human civilization. There�s reference of a boat �Noah's ark� in the Bible. Noah's ark was the boat built by the Biblical character Noah to save his family and animals from the Flood. Gondolas were the traditionally used boats in Venice.

Today, a boat is considered as one of the major tools of watercraft. A boat is a small vessel for traveling on water. It comprises of one or more buoyancy structures called hulls, and some system of propulsion such as a screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels or a water jet.

The front of a boat is called the bow or prow and the rear of the boat is called the stern. The right side is starboard and the left side is port. The boat toilet is called the �heads�.

A boat with a housing compartment is called a houseboat or barge. A pontoon boat is a flat-bottomed boat that serves as a dock or as a floating structure to support a bridge. The pontoon boat is also known as a party boat. It is constructed of round tubes (called sponsons) that are attached to the outside, bottom edge of a large flat deck. It has a safety railing that surrounds the deck from all sides. The helm station is placed either in the middle of the deck or off to one side. Pontoon boats may be furnished with lawn furniture, and some deluxe pontoon boats may have upholstered seating, a dinette table, a roof, a cooler, and maybe even a head (toilet).

A recreational boat is used for water sporting activities or other recreational purposes.

A sailboat uses the wind normally to propel the boat instead of an engine.

Boat Maintenance:

People fond of water sports or water adventures keep their own boats. Taking good care of one�s boat is very important. Good care and maintenance enhances the life of a boat and saves a lot of money also.

The following are some boat care tips:

� The boat engine should be flushed each time after it�s used in salt water.

� The underneath of the boat should be washed to prevent salt buildup.

� The entire boat should be washed using soap and water, after every single use.

� A non-skid cleaner should be used to scrub the deck.

We just got this message from a friend's wife. Her husband's EPIRB (Yacht NO KOMIS) went off and he dropped off the nets and e-mail. The local SAR does not seem to have many assets/capabilities. We don't know Indonesia very well, anyone have any suggestions as to any other actions she should take?

"Great to hear from you and get the photos. Life is stressful for me right now. Terry and his yacht "No Komis" are the subject of a search by Search & Rescue, Indonesia. The EPIRB went off last Saturday afternoon, transmitted for about 25 hours and stopped. There has been no Sailmail since Nov 28. Terry was leaving the next day for a brief overnight passage of 100nm. Boat Type: What type of boat are you looking for? Do you plan to operate it in salt water? Are you hoping to go fishing, ski, and cruise with your boat? The type of boats needs to suit your needs and time.

Big Is Not Always Best: It always is not better to buy the biggest boat your first time. They are harder to handle and look after. For a new boater, it also takes time to learn how to dock. Why not buy a small used boat the first time. There is a lot to learn and you won�t be so upset when you hit the dock a few times.

Asking Price versus Selling Price: When you see a boat that you like, go to another boat dealer to compare prices and value. You can go online to compare boat prices too. That sticker price does not always mean the real price. Some times you can bargain and lower the price too. (Just as in buying a car) Have some fun. Learn to haggle so you can get a decent price.

Buying a new boat is quite the same as buying a new car. But there are far more safety rules to follow with boating. Take your time, do your research and you will find the boat that you want. Happy Boating.

Building your own boat will likely cost more than buying one and could prove to be a safety hazard as well. Insuring it or passing government inspections/regulations my be difficult also. Patterns for the sections of the inflatable collar are hard to get and it is unlikely a manufacturer will supply them or that a dealer would have them. However, if you really want to try, a dealer will likely sell you the fabric, glue, parts, etc.

Know the mode of your choice.
You always have two options, to rent the Jet Ski on sight or rent it from a shop.

On-sight renting entails the process of making arrangements in local jet ski rentals located near or in the resort. By this, you normally have to wait in lines and pay higher rates.

When you rent in advance, you need to have equipments for transporting the jet ski into the resort. You obviously need to have a ski cart for handling. The prime advantage of this option is that you can readily jump into the waters without having to make the arrangements first. Plus, the privilege of paying less. You only have to worry about the transportation though.

Now we're done with the mode of rent, lets move into the issue of what jet ski to rent. Like with any other sports, jet ski requires a great deal of expertise. And for each level, there are types of jet skis that you may encounter.

A major component of an inflatable boat is obviously the fabric. Inflatable boat fabric technology has evolved greatly over the last 20 to 30 years, and now includes plastomers, polyurethanes and other fabrics, which can sometimes be stronger, lighter, thinner and less expensive to assemble than the original rubber fabrics. Of course it costs a great deal of money to develop new fabrics or even to switch manufacturing processes to use them. Many manufacturers, big and small, don't have the will or the resources to do this, and that's why they generally hide that fact by resorting to condemning new technological advances in fabrics.

Repairing a inflatable boat yourself is a difficult and often costly task. It is a complex procedure and the glue, solvents, fabrics and tools required are not easy to get and are usually expensive. However, most dealers stock these items and will sell you them, some will even offer directions and advice. Be warned though that "self repairs" may end in a visit to the dealer anyways, so a dealer evaluation before you try is always the best idea to determine the difficulty of the repair.

Some inflatable boats are still made from a rubber-based fabric called Hypalon. While this is still a very good material, its major downfall is that it can only be joined by gluing, done manually. Problems including poor bonds, delamination of seams or fabric can still affect these glued fabrics. Today, many inflatables are manufactured from polyurethane fabrics, although larger inflatables (particularly RIBs used for rescue or military purposes) use hypalon because thicker hypalon fabrics are still considered to be stronger and more durable than polyurethane. There are some hypalon fabrics that are "2-ply" or a double unit made up of hypalon/weave/hypalon/weave/hypalon and are used for extreme situations including bumper padding, bow skirts, anti-chafe patches and similar applications.

Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

Water skiing is a very common hobby today. It is popular in many regions throughout the world. One of the most important factors for water skiers is their boat.

Ski boats come in a variety of shapes and styles. Usually a boat for water skiing has a very shallow hull. This gives it a very shallow draft. Another very common feature is the inboard motor (As opposed to an outboard motor) which creates much less water disturbance allowing the water skier to go faster. Water skiing relies heavily on the ski boat as the water skier is pulled in order to gain speed and be able to perform a variety of water skiing stunts. These ski stunts include such acrobatic feats as flips, turns and even ski jumps. A variety of moves are possible limited only by the ability of the water skier. While outboard motors used to be very common in water skiing, the advances in technology have effectively ended its role in the sport of water skiing.

The recent introduction of �jet� powered skiing boats has created unique and challenging areas for water skiers. The speeds attained by these ski boats is so fast that only experienced water skiers should attempt to ski behind one of these water skiing craft. The water skiing boat driver is also a very important part of the skiing experience. Skiers and boat drivers must maintain some sort of contact, usually visual in nature, so that if the water skier should happen to fall or have other problems, they can work together to avoid skiing injuries. The water skiing boat and its driver are also responsible for staying on the course set up in skiing tournaments and skiing championships. The boat's driver or captain is responsible for lining the boat and the skier up together whether in skiing slalom courses or for water ski jumps. The water skiing boat driver and the water skier have to work together as a team with the water skiing boat as their common tool.

Jet skiing may be fun. But just like any other motor vehicle on water, it can impose great danger if used improperly. So to assure that you will get a 100% fun while eliminating the possible danger, here are some safety tips you should follow:

Learn how to operate the machine before hopping in�

It may be pretty basic but the simplicity of its look combined with your excitement to take the waters keep people from neglecting this. It may operate the same as a motorcycle or a snowmobile but it is still advisable to learn how to use the Jet Ski.

Wear life preservers�

This is a must. Like helmets when you ride a motorcycle, the Law requires anyone who uses jet ski to wear life jackets. It doesn�t matter if you know how to swim or not. If you are going to drive or ride a jet ski, you must wear life jacket. Aside from life jacket, you should be in proper attire when riding jet ski. These are gloves, goggles, and a wet suit.

Never ride close to another watercraft�

Most jet ski accidents are caused by collisions, so in order to prevent this from happening, stay at least 100 feet away from another watercraft, divers, rafts, and swimmers. Most beaches and lakes have set of rules with regards to the use of jet skis so you should know them first.

Never use the jet ski at night�

You might wonder why this riding at night should be avoided. Well, here is the main reason: open sea is dangerous at night. Never attempt ride on pitch-black waters. You will never know if there are other watercrafts on your way and you will never know the behavior of the water at night. And another thing: in case you get in the middle of the ocean, you have to wait for the sun to rise before anyone can see you.

Never ride a jet ski without lanyard�

What is a lanyard? A lanyard automatically cuts the engine in case you fall from the jet ski. It will spare you from swimming back at the shore at the same time save you machine from stowing away alone.

Be conscious on the rights of others�

Never let your jet ski becomes annoying to others. In other words: be mindful that there are other people who don�t want to be destructed by the sound or the wave your jet ski is making.

When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. We live aboard our beautiful 52-foot staysail schooner Marguerite (blue-water boat, built in 1983, major re-fits in 2000 and 2007, coast-guard approved, comfortable and sea-kindly) and plan to take her to the Mediterranean in late spring next year. "We" refers to Skipper Jim, First Mate Barbara, and First Mascot Sam. Despite her classic looks, Marguerite has modern equipment (roller furling jib, staysail, and foresail, in-mast furled main, state-of-the art electronics) that make it easy for the two of us, with occasional help by the cat, to sail her. For our transatlantic crossing (May/June 2008, via Bermuda and the Azores, with first landing in Portugal), though, we would like to have two additional crew members to share the experience and the watches. We are looking for experienced sailors who can stand watch by themselves and contribute to sailing and navigation.

If you intend to move your boat around with you then you should make sure that you have the right boat trailer, one that suits both your needs and your boat - not all trailers are the same. In simple terms a boat trailer is a frame with wheels that is designed to transport your boat across land behind a vehicle. The trailer is joined to a car by means of a locking device that is fixed at the end of the towbar. Before towing a boat the winch and locking couplet should both be locked in order for the boat to be secure.

Different Types of Boat Trailers

It is always a good idea to find out a little about the different types of boat trailers and then to undertake some research on the one that you think will best suit your needs. Just like boats, trailers come in many different shapes and sizes, from the height of luxury and all the fittings to a very simplistic model. There are two main types of boat trailers and these are bunk and roller trailers. Power boats have custom trailers and have to be bought when you buy the boat. If you have a sailboat then that will require a special trailer because it has a deep keel and a high winch stand.

You should have at least some idea of what works and what doesn't work for your boat, along with how much money you want to spend before you actually go out and buy. One of the first things that you should consider when you are choosing your trailer is the size of your boat. This is very important when you are buying a trailer, the right trailer should fit securely and snugly against your boat and you should always read the manufacturer's label on weight and size before you buy a boat trailer.

Getting the right boat trailer will also involve making sure that it has adequate features, there should be break and turn lights, which are required by law and a locking feature to attach it securely to your boat. The lights and axle need to be water tight as they will be submerged when the boat is launched. Some trailers will have a frame-mounted spare tire.

Manual vs. Mechanical

There are manual boat trailers where you have to do everything yourself and then there are those with a feature for making loading and unloading much easier. A small trailer will have a guide hoist to get the boat on the trailer while the larger models will have a one or two speed mechanical winch. The reason many people settle for adjustable trailers is because they make hauling so much easier. Some trailers will have electronic brakes which work in racing bike with the vehicle's brakes. It is always a good idea to decide just exactly how much you want to spend on a boat trailer before you go out to get it, as a trailer can be a very expensive item.

So, you're sailing along happily on your 40' yacht (just you and your wife), some 200 miles from the nearest landfall and you see a boat ahead. As you get closer you notice that the vessel is lying very low in the water and the people aboard are waving their arms frantically. As you approach you see that the vessel is very close to sinking and there are about 20 men aboard - obviously a boatload of refugees. It appears that the boat is going down fast.

The best part is because it is installed over your hull, you don't have to worry about mistakes being made like you do when your boat is being airbrushed or detailed. The boat wrap company will make sure everything is perfect before they even begin to install your images on your boat. Boat wraps are printed out before they are installed on your boat so if you see something you don't' like or it doesn't meet your vision, you can change it before its put on your boat. You can't do that with airbrush.

So whether you are an avid fisherman, a boat racer, or a boater hobbyist having a boat that is different from everyone else's is more of a reality than you thought possible with boat wraps.

After reading Liz Clark's sailing blog, my husband and I started talking about what was so refreshing about it (besides the good grammar and pics!). Well, the thing that jumped out was the fact that this cruiser wasn't identifying herself as a cruiser but instead as a surfer-girl. Her outlook on life, her goals, where she's going and what she's doing doesn't simply focus on "cruising" for the sake of cruising. We realized that we were craving another viewpoint like this. Navigation software - what is good for use on a sailing yacht?

Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

A jet ski is part water skiing device and part speedboat, with a definite hint of motorcycle during operation. Instead of the traditional propeller or screw motor, a jet ski uses an enclosed gas-powered motor to literally push water out in a jet stream. The jet ski operator straddles a central platform and assumes a shock-absorbing posture with knees slightly bent. The motor is electronically started with a toggle switch located in a column in front of the driver. Towing a boat can be a dangerous and potentially deadly. Although it can be dangerous, adhering to proper practices and techniques will ensure the safety of you, the passengers in your car and the other road users around you. Have a read of these 6 safety tips and be safe next time you tow your boat.

1) Boats are both large and heavy. When towing remember to accelerate slowly and to break softly. Take corners as slow as possible to prevent the boat from rolling off the rollers.

2) If traveling long distances, use snatch straps to secure down your boat. The straps will prevent the boat from bouncing up and down and causing damage to your boats hull.

3) If you have an outboard motor, secure it down so it does not get damaged during transport. You can place a wooden block underneath the engine mount to stop the outboard from bouncing up and down.

4) Check the wheel hubs regularly during long trips. You can check your hubs by feeling the temperature in the middle of your wheel (on the inside of the wheel nuts). If it gets hot you should consider replacing your bearings.

5) If undertaking a long drive consider tightening straps and the winch after a few miles down the road. The boat will naturally bounce around and find it's own place on the trailer so it is important to re-tighten once the boat has found it's spot.

6) Be sure to tie down any loose objects inside the boat. Anything that could blow off the back most likely will so ensure everything is secured.

Boating safety is important and starts even before the boat is in the water. Always remember to practice and encourage safe boating.

During racing, the controlled gybe manoeuver may be performed many times without the use of a boom preventer - this is understandable. However, when in a cruising mode and when setting a course for a distant destination, is there a good reason for not using a boom preventer, so that if an unplanned gybe occurs - possible injury is averted ????

Inflatable boats will have a logo, decal or other branding on them most of the time. I am looking for crew to help sail my boat to Asia this year. I usually sail single handed but am getting bored with my own company. The boat is a steel Van Dam Nordia Ketch.
