Boat Stereo - Selection Guidelines

By David Faulkner

it is but natural to think about buying a boat stereo that will round up your boat accessories. But before getting one, there are some things worth considering.

For one, a boat stereo should be both water- and rust-resistant on the outside as well as the inside. Do not purchase just any boat stereo. If possible, you should take some effort to find out how it was assembled and if the parts are waterproof and can withstand humidity.

Consider different extreme scenarios, such as the boat stereo falling on the water or it being exposed to the sweltering heat of the sun. Will your boat stereo still function under the said conditions? Check and double check if the boat stereo is really water-resistant and not just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill music box.

Another point of consideration is the cost. A boat stereo may be a hundred dollars more expensive than an ordinary stereo, but you have to be convinced that you are getting your moneys worth for it.

You yourself should somehow be knowledgeable about boat stereos as to their best features, whether their manufacture passes strict product standards, and whether they require easy installation and maintenance requirements. Being equipped with this information, you would be able to tell if you have the best deal for your money in acquiring a boat stereo.

Some people ignore this, but a boat stereo warranty is just as important as the unit itself. You should pay particular attention on the warranty period and the parts included under such. You may notice that a warranty may differ from one manufacturer to the next. No two warranties are alike. Therefore, you really have to understand the warranty aspect of a boat stereo should you decide to purchase one.

Having more than enough financial resources can get you the best boat stereo you can ever imagine. But then again, careful scrutiny must be undertaken to ensure that the boat stereo you acquire will provide you with many useful years of service.

Hints About water ski boat

Traditional sailboats are monohulls, but multi-hull catamarans and trimarans are gaining popularity. Monohull boats generally rely on ballast for stability, and generally are known as displacement hulls. This stabilizing ballast can be on the order of multiple tons of lead, for a 12m (39 Ft.) boat. However, it creates two problems; one, that this gives the monohull a tremendous inertia, making it less maneuverable and reducing its acceleration. Secondly, if the boat ever fills with water, it will sink immediately, without question.

Apart from size, sailboats may be distinguished by hull configuration (monohull, catamaran, trimaran), keel type (full, fin, wing, centerboard etc.), purpose (sport, racing, cruising), number and configuration of masts, and sail plan. Although sailboat terminology has varied across history, many terms now have specific meanings in the context of modern yachting.

Sailing Crew For Thailand To Eastern Med: End Feb 08

Thu, 3 Jan 2008 12:44:39 +0200
Sailing Crew - First mate wanted for approximately 8 week sailing trip from Phuket to Cyprus. Must have blue water sailing experience and speak fluent English. I'm looking for a really solid individual who I can trust enough to be able to sleep when I'm not on watch! Non smoker, no drugs, no booze at sea. Prefer somebody who likes fishing and diving. Absolutely no contribution. I pay all travel costs to get to Thailand and back home from the Med. Would consider paying a modest salary to the right person.

Being Your Own Mechanic as owner of a sailing yacht.

Sat, 8 Sep 2007 14:51:38 +0200
Reading this sailing blog for the past few weeks makes me realize how incredibly difficult it must be to own a boat if you don't have the skills to do the mechanical work yourself. I wonder what percent of today's cruisers rely on a mechanic versus do-it-yourself?
