Jet Ski Safety Tips

By Low Jeremy

Jet skiing may be fun. But just like any other motor vehicle on water, it can impose great danger if used improperly. So to assure that you will get a 100% fun while eliminating the possible danger, here are some safety tips you should follow:

Learn how to operate the machine before hopping in

It may be pretty basic but the simplicity of its look combined with your excitement to take the waters keep people from neglecting this. It may operate the same as a motorcycle or a snowmobile but it is still advisable to learn how to use the Jet Ski.

Wear life preservers

This is a must. Like helmets when you ride a motorcycle, the Law requires anyone who uses jet ski to wear life jackets. It doesnt matter if you know how to swim or not. If you are going to drive or ride a jet ski, you must wear life jacket. Aside from life jacket, you should be in proper attire when riding jet ski. These are gloves, goggles, and a wet suit.

Never ride close to another watercraft

Most jet ski accidents are caused by collisions, so in order to prevent this from happening, stay at least 100 feet away from another watercraft, divers, rafts, and swimmers. Most beaches and lakes have set of rules with regards to the use of jet skis so you should know them first.

Never use the jet ski at night

You might wonder why this riding at night should be avoided. Well, here is the main reason: open sea is dangerous at night. Never attempt ride on pitch-black waters. You will never know if there are other watercrafts on your way and you will never know the behavior of the water at night. And another thing: in case you get in the middle of the ocean, you have to wait for the sun to rise before anyone can see you.

Never ride a jet ski without lanyard

What is a lanyard? A lanyard automatically cuts the engine in case you fall from the jet ski. It will spare you from swimming back at the shore at the same time save you machine from stowing away alone.

Be conscious on the rights of others

Never let your jet ski becomes annoying to others. In other words: be mindful that there are other people who dont want to be destructed by the sound or the wave your jet ski is making.

Hints About outboard ski boats

Starlight 39 yacht- Stephen Jones designed the Starlight 39 with exceptionally beautiful lines to be a fast, safe, passage maker which would be a joy to sail. Stephen's successful design skills, coupled with the quality workmanship of the Rival Bowman craftsmen have developed one of the most successful yachts in her class. The Starlight 39 also enjoys the same exceptional qualities of thermal and acoustic insulation as the 35. Inside the hull, the deep bilge prevents any water from running into the accommodation when the boat is heeled. The half depth skeg, provides a lower bearing for the substantial rudder and ensures that the Starlight tracks straight without constant attention to the wheel. It is this attention to detail that makes the Starlight 39Mk2 a thoroughly seaworthy vessel.

Since Sea Doos come from the factory with about as much power as they could offer and keep reliability, modifications almost always shorten the engines time before a rebuild is needed. Therefore, my philosophy is "if you want to go faster, buy a faster STOCK Sea Doo!". A modified 2 stroke wont last long and is usually the cause of peoples complaints about them. Adding a high compression head and other engine mods will ultimately lead to a rebuild sooner than later. If you want your 2 stroke Sea Doo to go faster, buy a stock Sea Doo with a larger engine!

Racing yachts try to reduce the wetted surface area, which creates drag, by keeping the hull light whilst having a deep and heavy bulb keel, allowing them to support a tall mast with a great sail area. Modern designs tend to have a very wide beam and a flat bottom, to provide buoyancy preventing an excessive heel angle. Speeds of up to 35 knots can be attained in extreme conditions. Dedicated offshore racing yachts sacrifice crew comfort for speed, having basic accommodation to reduce weight. Depending on the type of race, such a yacht may have a crew of 15 or more. Very large inshore racing yachts may have a crew of 30.

I need 2 or 3 sailing crew for Seattle to Hawaii and on to Guam. I will depart from Seattle/Port Angeles on or about 1 September and leave the boat in Guam. The boat is a 42 ft Cheoy Lee, well outfitted and solid. I am expecting to allow 2 months for the trip to Guam including 10 days port time in Hawaii for refitting and repair.

Water Purification On Boats

Tue, 30 Oct 2007 20:45:45 +0200
I came across this product AQUA SALVEO for water purification. Just wondering has anyone used this product OR any other product to do this job. My boat has been sitting for 4 years now and I suspect the water is maybe older than that. I can't remove the tanks without some major demolition and reconstruction work so is this the best alternative.

Ciguatera, A Danger For Yacht Crews Sailing In The Tropics

Sun, 16 Sep 2007 12:09:24 +0200
When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?
