Finding the Best Boat

By Ray La Foy

Even if you have years of boating experience, finding the best boat can still be a tiring task. Whether you are looking for fishing boats or yachts for sale, there are still some basic things you need to look out for.

Among the several kinds of boats for sale, you have to choose one that fits your needs best. Figure out what is the most important aspect of boating for you. Will you use it as a fishing boat or a cruising boat? How many people should your boat be able to carry? How often will you be boating? These are examples of questions you may ask yourself when looking out for the perfect boat.

The price of the boats for sale is also something you should look at. Keep in mind the added maintenance and operation costs that the boat may have.

The basic types of boats are fishing boats, power boats, sailboats, personal boats, and self powered boats. Visit your local boat trader to acquaint yourself about these types of boats.

Fishing boats have several variations, mostly because they are used in different types of water. You need a different fishing boat for shallow freshwater fishing, and another one for deep ocean fishing. Of course, most fishing boats generally have storage and specially designed holders for your fishing needs (like poles, bait, storage for live fish, etc.) Your basic all-purpose fishing boat can be made of fiberglass, wood, or aluminum. Some fishing boats are even made specifically for catching fast kinds of fish like bass.

If youre looking for a power boat instead of a fishing boat, there are also varied choices for you. You can have a bow rider, which allows people to sit in front (known as forward access), or even inflatable dinghies that are easily transported. Just because you dont have a fishing boat, it doesnt mean that you cant fish with a power boat. Several powerboats have fishing and water-skiing modifications available.

Whether you buy a fishing boat, sailboat, or power boat, the financing and purchase agreements you go through will be very similar for all kinds of boats for sale. Make sure that your purchasing contract allows you to get your money back or replace the boat if it is not performing as promised. Get all warranties in writing in order to make the most out of your boat purchase.

Visit your marine supplies store or boat traders for other accessories and modifications you may want to add to your boat. Be sure to find a marine supplies store or a boat trader with gracious and informed staff so that your trip will not be a waste. Ask your boating friends for recommendations.

It may also help you to do a lot of research online or to hire a good surveyor when it comes to choosing the best boat for you. The bottom line is that the boat should meet your needs in terms of its use and performance. Happy boating!

Sailing equipment is an important part of the purchase of a new or second-hand boat. It is one of those things where you can spend as much money as you wish on equipment for your new cruiser or sailing yacht, so you must give yourself a budget. Obviously, there is a set of essential equipment that all water goers must have, but then there are different sets of equipment required, dependent on whether you will be messing around locally or being more adventurous with long off-shore trips.

A Personal Watercraft or Jetski could be considered generally as a one or two person motorbike for the sea. It is a small craft which is riden by its driver and/or passenger. They can accelerate quickly, move very fast through the water and have good manoevrability. This is all due to a powerful motor which drives an impellor to suck water into the jetski and then expel it through a directionally controlled nozzle. They are built to be very buoyant and therefore can be easily righted if they capsize. There are larger Jetskis available nowadays which seat three or four people. Many enthusiasts enjoy the exhilerating experience of riding them on the waves and even a beginner can learn to have alot of fun with these crafts within a very short time. There are now several established brands in the UK which range in price from about 5,000 up to over 10,000.

Inflatable boats will have a logo, decal or other branding on them most of the time. If not, they should all have an I.D. plate or patch identifying the boat brand, model, serial number, length, width, weight, capacities, manufacturer contact info and more. This plate is often located on the transom (back) of the boat. Contact the manufacturer using a Supplier's Index to attain information you may be looking for or may require in the future.

I'm a "forced retired" 45 year old Swiss South African software/electronics engineer looking for one fit & good natured male or female sailing crew to join me in an adventure, sailing from from Malta to Cape Town via the Atlantic and Brazil, beginning in October '07, later non-stop from Brazil to Cape Town. My boat is a 35ft steel ketch, primitive but very seaworthy and comfortable. The embarkation point is Malta, Gibraltar or the Canary Islands.
